Should I upgrade to Windows XP?

With the release of the latest version of Windows - Windows XP - some people are beginning to express some frustrations with this new operating system. Their biggest frustration is that if they upgrade from a previous version to Windows XP and try to use their same equipment - printer, scanner, etc. - they don't seem to work, or don't work as well.

The reason for this has to do with Windows XP itself. Every computer component that you plug into your computer requires what is called a "driver" that allows Windows to communicate with the component and allow it to work. This applies to all components, including your modem. Windows XP is going to require that you install all new updated drivers for all of your computer components.

It is for this reason that it is recommended that you do not upgrade your existing system to Windows XP. Unless you know that you have all the necessary drivers for all of your components, and that they are "signed" for Windows XP, they either will not work, or will not work properly. And not all of your components will have updated drivers available.

Additionally, if you purchase a new computer that is loaded up with Windows XP, you need to be sure that any other equipment you purchase to add to your computer is certified to work with Windows XP. Do not assume, just because it is sitting on the shelf beside the Windows XP computer, that it will work with that computer. Read the package and documentation carefully. You can save yourself a lot of headaches if you make sure before you buy.

If you do find yourself in a position to need to try to upgrade drivers for older components in order to use them with Windows XP, the best place to start is to locate the web site for the manufacturer of that component. If they have developed and released driver updates for your piece of equipment, you should be able to get that information from them, as well as how to find, download and install the new drivers.

The very best way to solve this dilemma is to purchase all new equipment designed to work together. Again, however, make sure you verify that everything will work with Windows XP. And you may even be able to sell your previous system to someone else that is looking for a computer system that can save them some money and still provide them with what they want.
